Squirreling Away Spring…

I am a squirrel.

Ok let me rephrase, I have squirrel-ly tendencies (not a fuzzy tail…) at times I think. Need evidence? Try here… or here… or really this whole blog for that matter- you just never know what you’re gonna get…or just look at me go as I clean house and do laundry and leave one room undone for another only to come back 3 hours later and wonder why is that pile of dirt on the floor when I just cleaned? Oh wait…I swept but went to get the dust pan and then got sidetracked. Womp womp….

But this squirrely-ness is not all bad… I tend to be a saver… hoarding my little acorn like treasures of fabric and sketches and notes and bible verses and stuffing them into the sometimes dark damp ground of my mind only to come back to them in the Spring to find they’ve yielded a whole new crop of budding ideas…

And I can be just as entertaining as those cute furry little creatures sometimes when I get excited about a project, business idea or sale. Just ask the husband who has to listen to said animated discourse regarding vintage shows and aprons and Etsy and email pen-pals and business ideas and so on and so forth.

At any rate, I’ve been humbly thanking God over here for the deliverance from winter and the official arrival of SPRING and squirrels and fresh air not laden with snow (even though the past couple of days have been in the 50s…whatever… the calendar says Spring began so I’m going with it.)

Even in the face of this, one of my favorite seasons, I see in myself sometimes I’m ready to spring forward in high gear with a project and sometimes I’m stingy… wanting to squirrel away my time, gifts or money. Yesterday had me thinking about abundance- moreover all the places in the bible where it talks about God’s abundance of faithfulness and love and blessings for us and what it would really look like to live everyday from a place of abundance? Of overflow? Not afraid to give away my time, talent and resources because I trust that God’s supply is vast and he provides everything I need?

Case in point: the boy and I were asked to come help out musically at another church’s contemporary service last Sunday night which we’ve attended with friends a few times in the past and instead of being lazy (like my flesh wanted because it was Sunday and we had already been to church once that day…) we went. We praised right along with their little flock and worshiped through the gift of song and it was well worth the effort. God did indeed provide songs, strength and endurance to get through the long day right up until we finished dinner at 8:30 when suddenly the sleepy feelings crept in.

This morning I read 1 Peter 4:10. It stuck with me and I’ve turned it over and over in my mind like a squirrel trying to crack an acorn…

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. USE THEM WELL to SERVE one another.

I know so many folks (including myself!) that I’ve been talking and emailing with lately are somewhere caught up in figuring all this out and asking one or the other or maybe all three of these questions … What are my gifts? Where is God calling me to use them? What does it look like to serve others and lay down my own agenda? I wish I knew all the answers, but this post on Lysa Terkeurst’s site seemed like an interesting place to start…

Lately I’ve been praying for directions, focus and a clear cut path, but it’s turning out to be more like a meandering country back road and that’s ok because I’ve decided I’m just going to savor the season and enjoy the sights along the way :

A late night concert date featuring the boys (well, my boy and his best friend as they held down the edge of the stage while I propped up my feet in the balcony which I had almost all to myself to watch J.Roddy Walston and the Business in Charlottesville.)

A spring-y outfit (my favorite shirt currently… gotta love Goodwill finds…):

Laughing over these two pointy eared partners in crime who decided to take up residence on our porch– the fluffy white one on the right is mama cat and the curious tabby on the left doing tricks for food is her kitten… {Side note regarding these two: This dynamic duo has learned to work smarter and not harder. This morning as the husband stepped out onto a dimly lit porch, something small and gray caught his eye and he realized our little furry outdoor interlopers had decided to honor us with the first fruits of their kill…a mouse! However, what I’m missing a picture of is that the mouse was already caught in a mouse trap… and since we don’t have any traps anywhere around our property we can only assume there’s a neighbor somewhere scratching their head… What vicious hunters… }

I could bore enthrall you with scads more feline shenanigans but I’ll spare you *for now* and move along with the rest of my Spring happenings as of late:

A sloooow re-population of the Etsy store…. because besides being a squirrel, sometimes I’m a tortoise too… but slow and steady always wins the race right…?screenshot

Also I won this necklace at my nephew’s school’s Silent Auction…and I may or may not have worn it everyday since…

Winter’s work is done (hopefully!) for this year and a new season is in store. My prayer is to keep forging bravely (!) ahead seeking God and trusting He’s just up ahead of me on the path ready to do new things this Spring.

  2. Heather,
So you are a squirrel and I (in my post today) am a hummingbird?! (This thought just made me laugh!) I love all these thoughts of pondering God’s purpose and plan and our part in it. Love, love this — God is up ahead of us on the path ready to do new things this spring — yes and yes!!! The necklace is gorgeous — inspiration for a little metal work of your own, friend?! 🙂

  3. You are so funny! I love this post as much as the walking one. By the way, I was telling my sister about the walking post as we were walking and pushing her sweet little one in his stroller, and we were both in tears by the time I was through. You have a gift for humor, but also for reaching through and touching the heartstrings! Keep writing please!!!😃
