Day 21 :: Getting Intentional with the Closet

So I ran across this idea a few weeks ago and jotted down a few things and then I started the whole 31 day thing... Are you surprised I’m still here plugging along 21 days in? Yeah, me too! After spending a little while intentionally combing my closet and digging into my dresser the past couple of weekends, I thought it fitting to come back around to this theme today…

put on love

Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, long-suffering; ….and above all these things [put on] love, which is the bond of perfectness. ~Colossians 3:12,14

These verses make me think- what am I putting on in my attitude? In the way I live my life? How’s the state of my heart? Are there things I need to let go of once and for all? More than anything am I putting on and wearing out love..? They also make me think of my overflowing closet too…

I got ruthless again the other day and filled up a grocery bag full of things from my wardrobe. {just so we’re clear- I use this term ‘wardrobe’ very loosely! It really is a hodge-podge of randomly collected things in there.} Maybe the fit wasn’t exactly right anymore, or the color didn’t go with anything else in my closet. Or maybe it was something I loved to pieces (literally) and it was time for it to live out the remainder of it’s life in the rag bag.

I’m sort of taken with the idea of the simplified wardrobe right now and I’d be happy if my closet even slightly resembled this one... The more I think on the idea of what I’m putting on and how this past 21 of 31 days has been going with me getting all intentional in so many areas, I know I want my attitude in life to reflect that as well. All attention to what matters. No wasted energy. Quality over Quantity.

No more closets full of ho-hum choices, so-so frocks and things that were bargains but don’t fit exactly right.

You know compassion and kindness always fit and flatter…

Why not take the time to survey your wardrobe {and heart!} to find the things to put on that make you feel great about facing the day? A good outfit day makes me feel almost as good as a good hair day! Sad but true…!

There really is a connection between what we put on and how go about our day.

lime shirt

…what I’m sporting today…this lime greenish gauzy shirt from H&M (via the Goodwill..) always speaks sweet nothings to me and I love it so it definitely made the cut… I accidentally graciously spared you the top of my head…I’m in desperate need of a hairdresser appointment…

So maybe we need to boil it down to the basics and then add in the spice of life…. Accessories! You know, jewelry and scarves. Shoes and bags…Second hand and renewed pieces…

After my latest wardrobe therapy this is what my dresser drawer looked like:

wardrobe files…the wardrobe files–filing t-shirts, sweaters and tanks like this was seriously a game changer — of course now I have an overwhelming need to go back and put it in rainbow order…

I dare you to clean out your closets. Throw out what’s not working. Go out there and shine. Wear your favorite color with abandon — or no color depending on what flips your fancy- – because there is no wrong answer here. Above all, remember each morning to put on your kindness, your humbleness and top it off with love.  Don’t just hide your light in the closet.

Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. ~ Matthew 5:15

Is there an attitude or piece of clothing you need to throw out?

What’s your favorite thing to wear? I’d love to hear about it!

  1. I have lots of things in my closet that I need to let go of….some of my mother’s things, for instance. I just need the time & energy to get it done! Otherwise, guess who will have the pleasure one day???

  2. I love purging my closet! okay, love and hate. Sometimes its hard to finally let go of that shirt or jeans that really aren’t ever going to fit again. But the organization and sanity are worth it! 🙂
