Three Things for a Hairy Situation

Almost a week ago I got a new hair cut…  I was used to wash, dry and go. Sometimes I didn’t even dry it {Gasp!} No hairspray. No hair products. My hair pretty much did what it wanted and it was ok with me. On the off day that it wasn’t cooperative (or I was too lazy to wash it) there was always a hat available.

Enter my new ‘stylish’ cut. I now feel like I’m learning to manage someone else’s hair. I went from shoulder length slightly layered naturally wavy hair to an edgy (or sassy depending on who you ask) angled bob and I have a neck… which is odd because it didn’t usually see the light of day unless my hair was pulled up in a ponytail- which is something that is nearly impossible now due to the length.

{I may or may not have had a minor freak out and regretted my decision– for shame on you pinterest and all your tantalizing ideas– when I felt her shears make that first cut so high on my neck…}

The other impossible thing is the wash and go attitude I formerly employed. Now I have to give it the evil eye and remember how to use my flat iron — not to iron it straight but to achieve the “beach-y waves” similar to what I left the hairstylist with. Really it’s kind of a cool trick– here’s the best tutorial I found if you’re into that sort of thing and have good hand-eye-mirror coordination or hair {sorry dad…!}

Truth be told that hat is looking like a not so bad option these days…

So we’re in a transition period- me and my locks- but it’s just hair and it will grow back. And who knows, maybe I’ll even like learning how to be a little more girly with my hair styling routine. Any hair care or product tips would be welcomed!

Sometimes it really stinks when a change is upon us- whether it’s one we asked for or not. I’ve heard that your hair can sometimes be unruly immediately after a big cut because it’s in shock and it can be a few days or washes before it behaves sweetly again. Maybe we react the same way in response to changes as well? Especially when it’s not an easy change, we can be unwilling to want to work at accomodating it and instead choose to run rather than try to redeem a situation.

There are several adjustments I’m having to deal with lately at home and at church and they haven’t been easy from coming to terms with a kitty that has cancer to learning the rhythms of working with a new music director at church.

Pets and people can be sad and unruly just like hair sometimes.

People even more than things have to restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed. Never throw out anyone. ~ Audrey Hepburn

To my vintage loving, re-purposing driven heart… this sounds about right though I don’t always make the best work of it.

We’re called to love God and love people. We’re called to trust and commanded not to worry. We’re invited to pray and leave the outcomes up to Him. Easier said than done I know. We want a hand in everything. We want to arrange things just so they suit us however the journey to the promised land is never without some desert wandering and doing things we really might not want to do.

One thing I know for sure: God always provides.

{yes the cat has ‘clothes’ on… no it’s not because she loves fashion… it’s a long story…}

Sometimes the best attitude we can have in any situation is to be flexible, be still and trust the master stylist’s hand.

Since I’m a little early for my somewhat usual “Five” posts on Friday, how about Three Things to Love on Thursday??

This song…. Y’all I’ve linked to it before here and shared it with lots of different folks at church but it’s never been a blip on anyone’s radar to learn until the other night when our new choir director pulled it out for us to learn… and I got chills…

♥ Whether you look Pastor Nick Holden up on FB or follow him on IG — just do it! His posts will not fail to bless you… “God’s purpose always outlives our temporary circumstances so I should make His purpose my priority no matter the setting I find myself in…”

♥ If you fear the journey… look no further than this post to see just how awesome our God is in providing just what we need…

So for whatever hairy situation we’re in -the pets are moving on, the folks at church are imperfect, the job is non-existent, the dream is unfulfilled, the money or the hair is coming up short- Take heart for He has overcome all of that and more – just to be with YOU.

  1. Heather, first – thank you for mentioning my post. Second, your new haircut is beautiful (!!!) and was most brave of you. Third, your kitty … looks just like our beloved Patches, who also had cancer & it was such an emotional journey for our family. I am so grateful our God is with us through all things. Blessings to you!

  2. Heather,
    So sorry to hear about your cat’s prognosis. But on the upside, your new do is so lovely! Hair products? You’ve come to the right girl! (ha!) My main criteria is that they smell delicious — I use blueberry shampoo, two styling products from Unite that smell like watermelon and coconut — so maybe my problem is that I want my hair to smell like dessert?! But I’m sure you will find some that work for you and you might even enjoy using them! 🙂 And most of all from this post is a hearty I’m with you on taking heart, God is with us, wherever we happen to be on our life’s journey and I know he’s got this too! 🙂
