Almost a week ago I got a new hair cut…  I was used to wash, dry and go. Sometimes I didn’t even dry it {Gasp!} No hairspray. No hair products. My hair pretty much did what it wanted and it was ok with me. On the off day that it wasn’t cooperative (or I was too lazy to wash it) there was always a hat available.

Enter my new ‘stylish’ cut. I now feel like I’m learning to manage someone else’s hair. I went from shoulder length slightly layered naturally wavy hair to an edgy (or sassy depending on who you ask) angled bob and I have a neck… which is odd because it didn’t usually see the light of day unless my hair was pulled up in a ponytail- which is something that is nearly impossible now due to the length.

{I may or may not have had a minor freak out and regretted my decision– for shame on you pinterest and all your tantalizing ideas– when I felt her shears make that first cut so high on my neck…}

The other impossible thing is the wash and go attitude I formerly employed. Now I have to give it the evil eye and remember how to use my flat iron — not to iron it straight but to achieve the “beach-y waves” similar to what I left the hairstylist with. Really it’s kind of a cool trick– here’s the best tutorial I found if you’re into that sort of thing and have good hand-eye-mirror coordination or hair {sorry dad…!}

Truth be told that hat is looking like a not so bad option these days…

So we’re in a transition period- me and my locks- but it’s just hair and it will grow back. And who knows, maybe I’ll even like learning how to be a little more girly with my hair styling routine. Any hair care or product tips would be welcomed!

Sometimes it really stinks when a change is upon us- whether it’s one we asked for or not. I’ve heard that your hair can sometimes be unruly immediately after a big cut because it’s in shock and it can be a few days or washes before it behaves sweetly again. Maybe we react the same way in response to changes as well? Especially when it’s not an easy change, we can be unwilling to want to work at accomodating it and instead choose to run rather than try to redeem a situation.

There are several adjustments I’m having to deal with lately at home and at church and they haven’t been easy from coming to terms with a kitty that has cancer to learning the rhythms of working with a new music director at church.

Pets and people can be sad and unruly just like hair sometimes.

To my vintage loving, re-purposing driven heart… this sounds about right though I don’t always make the best work of it.

We’re called to love God and love people. We’re called to trust and commanded not to worry. We’re invited to pray and leave the outcomes up to Him. Easier said than done I know. We want a hand in everything. We want to arrange things just so they suit us however the journey to the promised land is never without some desert wandering and doing things we really might not want to do.

One thing I know for sure: God always provides.

Sometimes the best attitude we can have in any situation is to be flexible, be still and trust the master stylist’s hand.
