On Being Broken

It has been an emotional time around these parts in the last week…

It all leaves me wondering.. it leaves me with a heavy heart… and a sore nose from crying…

And I’ve been thinking… God will sometimes break you… in order to bring you closer to him. He’ll strip away the job, the family, the pride, the health….He’ll leave you with no where to turn but him because he wants to be with you in the best possible way. His highest goal is to have a relationship with you. We often let other stuff get in the way though… we’re human and all so busy. We think we know better than God…

But it’s not like he wants to break us and leave us there. He doesn’t lead us to the valley as a final destination- he leads us through the valley (Psalm 23) He wants us to be in green pastures with our heads anointed with his healing oil feasting with Him victorious over our enemies. He wants goodness and mercy to follow us…

Wanna hear a funny story? Our chorus this past Sunday was “Surely Goodness and Mercy Shall Follow Me” and the words (not the page number) were printed in the bulletin, only I hadn’t grabbed one on the way in to service….So as the intro started, I picked up my hymn book thinking I could search the index real quick and as I opened it I looked down and saw I was on the exact page of the song…

Mind=blown. God I hear ya…!

...the beauty in the broken...
…the beauty in the broken…

Their greatest need was not more religion, but brokenness, repentance and faith. ~Paul Tautges

I’m in a ramblin’ kinda mood I know, but I told you all that to tell you this:

There is nothing that can’t be put back together, reworked, reclaimed, or recreated when we let God be the glue.

He will take the old, the shabby, the worn out, the broken, the missing pieces…. and he will restore, refinish, reshape, reuse and fill in the holes of our heart. If we let him. He will not force himself on us but he is there. Waiting.

Acts 17:27-28: God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

Some days we can feel like we’re drowning in a sea of all our bad decisions and everyday life events but if we just call to the one who is above all, he won’t fail to save us and make us complete. Unbroken. Healed. He will lead us to the beauty in the brokenness.

Hey now this is my desire, consume me like a fire
‘Cause I just want something beautiful
To touch me I know that I’m in reach
‘Cause I am down on my knees
waiting for something beautiful
