I’ve been totally enamored with this study series lately, Jeanne Oliver’s Becoming:The Unfolding of You… and yesterday’s gal, Stephanie Nelson, made quite an impression. She told of a dream that a friend had about her where everyone was picking out dresses for her and she carried them all in the dressing room but at the end she came out without any dress on at all, instead declaring in all her bareness that “this was the one”! (Aren’t dreams wacky?? Just last week I dreamed my husband was a kitten and we were at a concert… yeah I have no idea the meaning for that one, but I digress)
Anyway, that dress dream the girl described really hit home in so many ways. I don’t know if you’re blessed to have found your calling in this life or if you’re like a lot of the rest of us who are still holed up in the dressing room trying stuff on for size…
In the past year I have spent countless hours, days, dollars just trying to figure out what God’s plan for me is. I have read so many blogs- trying on what that person over there is doing in graphic design or thinking on what that gal is doing with interior design and throwing on that person’s calling seeing if it fits all in an effort to discern what it is that I should be about the business of. I have watched Shark Tank (because oh the plethora of business inspiration to be mined from that show!!) I have stuffed my closet and my life with ideas about what I could be or should be- according to the trends I see. I have tried to look like this gal or that gal in my writing or in the way I decorate my home. It has just been all sorts of “Are You My Mother” (you do remember that Dr. Seuss book right?) up in here as I look to this and that for answers. For the aha! moment….and I am e.x.h.a.u.s.t.e.d.
Just done.
There is no amount of striving that can fulfill us. It is only God who restores and who can make that perfect fit for us in living our lives out in connection with our callings. And if we haven’t come to that peaceful place yet where we’ve achieved that then it’s time to strip it all down and return to square one. Go back to the Word and what God says about you. Realize that God is for you and by golly just get out of your own way and be comfortable in your own life as it is right this very minute.
Comfortable being You.
Just be You. Totally stripped down You.
In all your glory. Scars and shortcomings all laid out there. Another sweet gal put it this way on her blog this week…We can’t possibly do any good in this world wearing masks.
Scary. Absolutely without a doubt. Worth the hassle and the heartache of being totally exposed to your creator? And to others? Absolutely without a doubt.
I’ve got to believe He is at work tailoring the perfect situation as we speak.
So what does that leave us to do:
1.Pray
2.Pray
3.Seek wise counsel
4.Pray some more
And in the mean time, can we all agree to just strip off and throw out what doesn’t fit and not feel bad about it? Because nobody really has time to put up with clothes that make you feel all squished together…either in the dressing room or in our own closets! And if you need more bolstering on that front, check out this girl’s take on it, you won’t regret it!
Happy Thursday friends!

Heather,
I LOVED Stephanie’s story too but what a lovely conclusion you have drawn! And I adore the graphic you made too — it goes perfectly with my vintage dress form that I may have to print it out and hang it where I can see it every day! You are doing all that you can do to seek wise counsel and pray and I just know (from experience!) that eventually God’s answer will be clear to you. Keep praying, keep hoping, keep trusting! 🙂 These are the words I tell myself every day, so I thought you might like to hear them too, friend!
