Release & Reinvention: The Art of Letting Go

There’s an art to letting go.

Trees have absolutely no problem with this- every year their leaves give way.

I find it a bit more challenging.

Because if letting go of old habits, ways of seeing, patterns of behaving, outdated loyalties and other things that are past their season are gone, where does that leave me..?

Exposed with bare branches like the trees in the winter and dare I say a bit uncomfortable.

But it was time to let some things blow away like leaves in the wind in order to reveal who God made to be before I started covering it all up.

Everywhere I looked the message seemed to be one of reinvention. Not in the spirit of becoming something totally different but of releasing and returning to my roots.

Since last fall I closed one of my vintage booths, stepped into an administrative role versus teaching consistently at church and took a sabbatical from the pressures of choir for the season.

It wasn’t easy. I’m the queen of holding onto things- emotions, furniture, and stories that don’t serve me just to name a few.

But I knew it was necessary.

I’m finally learning to tune in and recognize the signs like when I keep pushing through a role I used to love but find I’m more frustrated than fulfilled- it’s time to reevaluate.

Or when the future I think I want keeps being at odds with the reality I’m currently living.

How bad do I want what I say I want? And am I really willing to change to get it?

To keep ignoring the dissonance is madness.

I also let go of the over-thinking for my own spaces. We bought a fridge, a table and chairs, a cooktop and paint for the bedroom!

Because how do you know until you try? And that’s 80% of the solution in our home and life- being willing to try.

So my question for you in this season: What are you refusing to release?

Maybe it’s the idea that you can’t have the beautiful home you see on your Pinterest boards because you don’t have enough money, time or skills. (If you’re interested.. I have a post to help you with that…)

Maybe it’s an outdated mindset.

Maybe it’s some clutter in your closets or on your counters or your big pile of things you *might* need for later… but what is it all costing you right now?

Where are you settling?

What limitations are you arguing for and clinging to?

What are you afraid to let go of to get to the abundant life and home you dream of?

The solution isn’t changing out the honey oak trim, the number on the scale or even the frustrating relationships, it’s deciding who you really are, what you want and choosing over and over each day in little and big ways to pursue it.

This week I was greeted by lush green leaves back in their proper places on the trees outside my office window and just like them I’m also experiencing new growth.

If you’re ready for some release and reinvention of your own, this is the perfect time.
