One of my all time favorite things to do is to putter around the house moving furniture, hanging pictures, purging and organizing junk treasures and just in general fluffing my nest.
It even floats my boat sometimes to pull down curtains to wash and sweep and shine up everything— though the husband may beg to differ on that… I really do like to clean, I just haven’t found the time lately…
And upon occasion I have been known to find my groove in turning up the music, chopping, cooking, simmering and stirring up something good to feed my family and others.
I think in a perfect world, I’d don my flirty fifties style apron and be a full-time homemaker.
So today I’m going deeper picking one of the gifts of provision I wrote about yesterday and praising God today for a home to make into a haven and for the simple pleasures of homemaking.
Ok I admit sometimes the keeping of the house is not so pleasure-filled. Pets and people and unforeseen leaks are destined to make messes. It truly is a vicious cycle of chores some days. And though I don’t know where you are in your journey– tired homemaker mama, empty-nester or sweet single I do know that I was uplifted to find that God is a homemaker too and in Him we can find the strength to mop up that mess, pick up the pieces, and find new and exciting ways to cook chicken. Again.
Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. ~ Ephesians 3:17
I don’t know the imagery you get in your head upon reading that scripture (sometimes I think I’m the only wacky one…) but I can just imagine God coming into our hearts, putting down rugs, painting the walls, re-arranging the decor, measuring for the sofa, dusting and sweeping out the cobwebs, putting on a pot of soup, lighting the candles and settling in. It makes me feel all warm and cozy… just the way I want my home to feel.
Sometimes I struggle with wanting things arranged just so… or with wanting the perfect couch… or different cabinets… all the things that I think would make a better home. When the only thing really needed to make my home a haven is my heart.
When we put our trust in God, he makes our heart His home. Which in turn blesses our own efforts within our earthly homes. He establishes our foundations, rebuilds our house and teaches us care-taking skills like wisdom, love and compassion for all those who enter into it.
And for that I’m thankful too.

I like your approach on this especially God being a homemaker in our hearts. He totally works in our hearts to change them and mold them to His will. Thanks for the encouraging insight.

Oh that was fun to read and so good. Yes I’m a nest fluffer too, a potterer, rearranger, cozifier and paint it if it doesn’t move kind of house lover too. I love your analogy of Christ making His home in us, putting down rugs, hanging pictures, getting cozy within us – and He wants to be there. Share many of your thoughts. A pleasure to read. I love making our home a haven. A place to rest, a soft place to land after a hard day, a shelter. It’s what Jesus is to us, right?! I’m a total homebody so days like today (no school!!!) when we are all home together are the best.

I’m a big fan of cleaning too — it possibly borders on obsession but clean is better than not, right??! I’ve never thought of God making his home in our hearts and then blessing our earthly homes, but I love that perspective! And I think changing and rearranging furniture is quite fun, too, just keep a light on so the husband doesn’t trip over the ottoman in the middle of the night! LOL

I think that finally, (after a number of years) I have realized that moving that sofa, changing things around, feels good and the problem is I need to put it perspective of other things. There are days when I wish I had new cabinets, new floors, etc., but I have a roof over my head and God in my heart and when I keep him first, somehow the other stuff just isn’t important. God keeps my heart right and my house will turn out fine. Love you girl. You really make us think.

Cute post! People think (especially my kids) that it’s weird that I like to clean as well. I love washing dishes, just something about putting my hands into that hot sudsy water. lol! Yes, I have a dishwasher, but hand wash my vintage ware. Love your flirty apron and pecan pie is one of my favs! Making two today. Not a day goes by that I don’t put my trust in the Lord. Don’t know where I’d be without him! Feel very blessed!! Thanks for sharing with Share Your Cup.
